| Customer Reviews: Decent performance December 27, 2009 A. S. li (St Louis) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Pros: - Decent day performance
- Excellent night performance (with IRs on)
- Excellent Wireless range
- Best bang for your buck so far
- Megapixel resolution
- Simple UI and plenty of features
CONS:
- Supported in IE only, Asante claimed to have Safari soon.
What the guy said below about wireless range is not what I experienced. I have Axis 207MW (which is 3x the price) and wireless range is identical. Signal is going through 3 walls from upstairs and I am using WNDR3700 router.
Make sure to upgrade to latest firmware 1.34, otherwise you'll ran into an issue with disappearing image.
I've compared it to my Axis 207MW and while Axis has better image quality, sharper lens and wider angle, it's 3x the price and useless at night without IRs. I would pick another Voyager today for home use.
Great camera! February 28, 2010 B. Finley (Merced, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've got a few of these cameras running 24/7 hooked to a cheap computer for monitoring/recording motion for home security. I can't say enough good things about these cameras!
The built-in IR lighting and night mode are wonderful. For the price, I can't believe they come standard.
I've used Linksys and Panasonic cameras in the past, and this one blows them away. The Linksys cameras always had issues reliably staying connected with the router. The Panasonic cameras, while reliable in my experience, are at least twice the price, and don't have built-in IR illuminators and some of the other features the Voyager-1 has.
Asante's free VMS software can handle up to 16 cameras in several "grid" layouts. Single screen, 2x2, 4x4, and some hybrid modes of each where one feed is larger than the rest. It does motion sensor recording (video and audio), full time recording via scheduling, and then the usual sending of alerts.
The Voyager-1 also has output relays for turning on an external alarm (for instance), as well as a jack for an external speaker (so you can send audio to the camera as well as receive audio).
As far as the ActiveX issue or "Windows" only thing, that's soon to be a thing of the past. I've actually seen the Safari support firsthand in the upcoming soon-to-be-released firmware. Now an iPhone can point directly to the camera's main page and (after logging in), see the video stream in real-time. It's sharp, and the framerate is quite good! You can actually see the entire 1280x1024 image area over the phone. You can also access the settings page from the iPhone and/or Safari, which means no more requirement of ActiveX or Windows.
About the only bad thing I can really say about the cameras is the motion sensing seems to be a bit on the over-zealous side, so even on low settings I get some false recordings. Hopefully that's something they'll get worked out in a future firmware update. Since Asante has an office in Fremont, California (where their Tech Support is located), they seem pretty open to bug reports, new ideas and suggestions about their cameras.
I've been using my setup for a few months now and would definately recommend them.
More features that actually work and a better lens and sensor March 15, 2010 P. Sih (Sparks, NV) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I use this camera to send weather images to a server via FTP. I selected it because it can time stamp an image before sending it and it has a higher resolution image than other similar cameras. it is also wireless. It's hard to find a camera that can do all the above. The time stamping of images is the difficult bit.
The image quality is true to its pixel count. The lens is better than most, much easier to focus, and the resulting image is superior to what I can get with any other comparable equipment. It has better image quality than its rivals from Linksys, Panasonic, and D-Link, all of which I use too.
It was amazing to find it had an automatic IR night capability. Although this is not what I have used, I could not resist giving it a test run. The images are again sharp and the illuminator is effective to 10 or so feet. This camera can automatically switch between day with no IR and night mode with IR illumination and higher sensitivity. I am going to try and set it up to see if I can catch some animal activity outdoors. Note, IR requires a different focus setting than visible light so redo the focus for IR if you use it.
Another feature I don't use but did experiment with was the motion sensing. One can define up to three rectangular areas to sense and each area can have one of five sensitivity settings. It seems to work quite well, and none of the other products in this range seem to have this flexible a sensing arrangement. One can also define rectangular "privacy" areas where a solid color is substituted for a part of the image. I probably won't have any use for that but maybe others will.
For those who have security applications, it looks like the motion sensor can set off an alarm output that can be defined to be NO or NC. There are hard contacts available on the camera for this.
This would mean the camera could be used as a video motion sensor to trigger a conventional alarm system.
The documentation and sales info is poor and does not do the product justice. For the low price, I would just buy it and try one.
Caveat: It only works with IE.
Finally! An IPcam that is near HD clear and cheap April 3, 2010 S N (Westminster, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm an IT guy and have tried several IP cam version and by far this is the BEST out there and cheap. It's super clear even at greater resolution. It's MP4 and 1024x768 resolution (XGA). MP4 is near HD quality. It won't be like blueray but hell way better than those early vga ipcam. You get free software to monitor up to 16 IPcam. IP cam means it is a camera that can network to your computer. It can network by wire or by wireless wifi 802.11b or g. The wifi can be wep, wpa-psk, or wpa2-psk. Best of all, it is both day color ip camera and night vision camera. Try to find one for around $100 with great quality at large resolution and networkable, and you won't find 1 anywhere. I'm swapping out all my old cam for these babies. The software has tons of features. I can record sound and use external trigger NC or NO. Man, this rocks by far!!!!! It also has motion detection and blocking. It also has trigger function and scheduling. It can push files out to a NAS (remote network disk). It doesn't have SSL but it does have ip filter so that can do. It is powered by long AC cable - thank god it does not use battery. It kick all other ipcam in the tutu. Love it! Pretty easy to install and tweaking to your liking. Its snapshot can be accessed by any standard program that can open JPG file and even web browser such as IE or Firefox. It uses activeX, thus is is best only with IE browser. Vendor has said they make it workable with other browser later on. But if you want to use it in Firefox, just install the add-on "IE Tab" in firefox and you'll be able to get this work inside it. No biggy. It beats Trendnet, D-Link, Linksys, Axis...IMHO.
great specs, missing basic features March 24, 2010 M. lew (SE US) I purchased this camera to work with an external surveillance controller. while the camera has great resolution, is easy to set up and has some great features as a stand-alone unit, it is lacking in basic features needed to integrate into another system. It will for instance transmit motion video on its own accord but can't be accessed by an external app for still image capture. You can't point your surveillance device at the IP,port, source for the image file. It also has limited browser compatibility.
At the time of writing, Asante claims to have a firmware release in the works to address these issues, saying it will be released "in a month or so". I'm keeping the camera in good faith that they will release the FW. But until they do, it's an ugly paperweight.
